Review of THE BARGAIN by Christine S. Feldman and Pinterest Inspired Coffee Table Project

the bargain

THE BARGAIN by Christine S. Feldman is a fun, entertaining romance that I recommend to anyone looking for a quick, light-hearted, love story. Along with the review, I am happy to share my most recent project – an old camping chair renovated into an end table 🙂

Blurb:

Tomboy Shannon Mahoney has always been a lot more comfortable with power tools than high heels or lipstick, and she wishes she could reinvent herself and finally tell her perfect boss, Drew Kingston, she has had a crush on him since high school. But she is just as tongue-tied and awkward around him now as she ever was, and long-familiar patterns are hard things from which to break free…

Ladies’ man Michael is a former bad boy looking for redemption. He is desperate to atone for past mistakes that he made with his family, but younger brother Drew has cut him out of his life and refuses to even speak to him. Which means Michael needs help getting to Drew.

And so he approaches Shannon with a proposition: If she will get Drew to agree to hear him out, Michael will mentor Shannon in how to win his brother’s heart. Suspicious of Michael’s motives, Shannon initially enters into the bargain just to make sure Michael isn’t actually in town to cause trouble for Drew, but the two unlikely allies are surprised to discover they enjoy each other’s company far more than either expected.

Shannon starts to realize that maybe love isn’t about reinventing yourself after all. It’s about finding your perfect match.

Review:

I read the blurb a while ago for THE BARGAIN and immediately added it to my TBR list. I was so excited to finally have the opportunity to read it, and it did not disappoint in the slightest. THE BARGAIN focuses on the main character, Shannon, a woman in her late twenties who lacks confidence in herself and tends to hide behind frumpy clothing and ponytails. Even though she has moved past her high school years, she has discovered that some crushes are hard to let go. After ten years of pining after a man who is now her boss, she is faced with an opportunity to take control of her life when she meets her boss’ brother, a man who tends to get under her skin every time he speaks. When the two agree to help each other, an unlikely friendship is formed that shows romance sometimes comes when it’s least expected.

I loved this story from the beginning. It reminded me of the movie, The Ugly Truth, starring Gerard Butler and Katherine Heigl. It had lines that made me laugh out loud and the character’s flaws were realistic and likeable. THE BARGAIN kept my attention throughout and I read it quickly because I couldn’t wait to find out what would happen next. My only complaint is that I wish it was longer because I didn’t want it to end. Though it is an adult love story, the romance part of the story is light and sweet (no love scenes) and I would recommend the book for adults as well as teenagers who are looking for an entertaining romance 🙂 I am glad that I bought a paperback version of the book because it is one that I will want to read again.

BEFORE

I’ve had this folding chair for a while. With an old canvas seat, my grandpa used it to take fishing over the years, and when he moved over ten years ago, he didn’t want to take it and gave it to me. I’ve held onto it with the intention of fixing it up and finally decided that it was now or never 🙂

My original goal was to take off the old, dirty canvas, sand down the rough wood, and reattach new material. I dug out some cute denim material I had in the closet and started to get frustrated when I realized that the wood wasn’t cut even, and one side was wider than the other. After taking measurements, I took the material off again, stared at it for a minute, and then the image of an end table came to me. I remembered that my husband had extra wood panelings in the garage left over from another renovation project, and I immediately got to work.

I sanded and stained the base and stained the panels to match. We had the stain laying around in the garage too, so I didn’t have to spend a penny. I let the stain dry completely overnight, then used heavy duty wood glue to piece the panels together. I also attached 3 wooden panels across the underside to reinforce it. The final step was to glue the table top to the base. The final result was a cute, useful end table that matched my rustic decor. 🙂

Review of OLD SINS, LONG SHADOWS by B.D. Hawkey and Pinterest Rainbow Swirl Cake & Butterfly Themed Birthday Party

old sins long shadows

I usually review paranormal stories of some sort, whether they are YA, NA, or Adult, and on occasion I review a contemporary romance novel, and so I was excited to read OLD SINS, LONG SHADOWS because it strays from the usual books that I read. I wasn’t sure what to expect from the story, but as soon as I read the first page I got a slight thrill as I was taken back to my college days when I took 18th Century Literature and read all of the usual classics of that era, Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice, Wuthering Heights, etc… I enjoyed this story even more because it had more edge and unexpected turns than the traditional classics. Enjoy the blurb and review and afterward be sure to check out my Pinterest experiment making a rainbow swirl cake 🙂

Blurb:

Nominated for the 2014 RONÉ “Best Indie or Small Published book of 2013 Award”. A Cornish Victorian romance set against the backdrop of the magnificent Bosvenna Estate, with eccentric rural characters and the sweeping hills of the dramatic Bodmin Moor. Janey Carhart’s story is a tale of obsession, jealousy and love.

At the age of nine, Janey’s younger sisters die from scarlet fever and her grief stricken mother blames Janey for their deaths. Financial difficulties and a desire to win back her mother’s love, forces Janey to enter service where she quickly rises through the ranks.

Upon her arrival to the elegant Cornish Country Estate, she successfully secures a position of a lady’s maid for the wealthy and powerful Brockenshaw family. An exchange of letters between Lady Brockenshaw and her son ignites Janey’s interest, but Janey’s feelings for this mysterious and charming gentleman soon change her life forever.

Old sins cast long shadows and not only does Janey’s mother’s wrath affect Janey’s life, there are others whose sins risk destroying her, the people she cares about and her capacity to love again. Daniel Kellow, her neighbour, offers his help. Can she trust this man who has, it is rumoured, killed a man? Who is the real Daniel Kellow and can she trust him? Can he trust her?

Review:

This has been my of my favorite books of the year so far! Don’t let the cover fool you. Even though it is beautiful, I don’t think it portrays the emotional depth and romantic roller coaster that is experienced by the main character, Janey. Told from multiple points of view, OLD SINS, LONG SHADOWS is mostly told from the viewpoint of Janey who is hired as a lady’s maid. She struggles to find her way amongst the rest of the staff and soon fights her attraction to two very different men – one who is above her class and the other who is abrupt, mysterious, and aloof.

As the story progresses through rich English language and imagery of the Cornish countryside, made more realistic by an author who is from the country, Janey is confronted with one emotional struggle after another. It was a tale of love, turmoil, and emotional struggle, and without giving the story away, I adored the ending even though I didn’t want the story to end, and highly recommend this story to anyone who enjoys a rich, romantic historical saga. This was a story whose characters stayed with me long after I finished the book.

Pinterest Project

My daughter knew exactly what she wanted for her 6th birthday – a rainbow swirl cake and a butterfly themed birthday party. I prefer homemade cake over store bought, and I am certainly not the most artistic cake decorator out there, but I came up with a cake design that was cute for a 6-year-old’s party and easy enough that anyone with a basic sense of how to bake a cake can do 🙂

The batter itself was easy because I used a simple box cake mix. I’m usually all about making everything from scratch – which is what I did for the frosting – but for this recipe, a box cake mix was just fine. To make a four-layer cake, as seen in the picture, I used two boxes. The rainbow swirl part is easy. As you can see in the pictures below, I measured out equal parts of cake batter into separate bowls then added food coloring to each.

photo 1(3)

After that it was a simple matter of dropping various colors into the cake pans.

photo 2(4)

I made sure to allow the cakes to cool completely before removing them from the pans, so the cake wouldn’t crack. The next step was to make the delicious, light and creamy frosting. I am usually picky about frosting, that’s one of the reasons I don’t like store bought cake, the frosting is usually too heavy and thick. If you like a light frosting, this one is perfect. (Note this recipe is for 2 round cake layers. If you want 4 layers as I made you’ll have to double the recipe.)

Cool Whip Frosting

  • 1  8oz. Cool Whip (thawed)
  • 1 3.5 oz package of instant vanilla pudding (other flavors would be good too)
  • 1 Cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla (that’s what the recipe calls for but I used orange extract instead. SO good!)

Combine the pudding with milk and flavoring. Mix until smooth. Gently fold in Cool Whip.

Once the frosting is made it’s a simple matter of laying down each layer of cake and spreading the Cool Whip mixture on top of each layer. Once all of the layers are stacked, spread the remainder of the frosting to completely cover it.

photo 4

There was no way I was going to get the frosting perfectly smooth, so instead I used a fork and swirled it through the entire cake to give it texture. After that, it was a simple matter of pressing in the small candies around the cake. I was afraid the candies would be hard, but they were chocolately and soft on the inside (found in the cake department at Walmart). The butterflies on top were lollipops ordered from Oriental trading company. Super easy to stick into the cake. The only mistake I made (and I should have known better), don’t put the candies in until you’re almost ready to serve it. I made the cake the night before and decorated it, and by the next morning, a lot of the coloring from the candies had dripped into the white frosting. It was still cute, but if you want a cake that looks as perfect as possible, I would wait to decorate it.

Going along with the butterfly theme, I also found a few fruit, veggie, and candy ideas on Pinterest and tried to recreate them. The kids all thought it was fun 🙂

My daughter also insisted on a pinata. While I was considering projects for her friends, I came across these cute canvas butterfly bags, also from Oriental Trading Company. I bought fabric markers, and the bags served not only as a project for the girls, but also as candy holders once the pinata was cracked open 🙂

Author: Crystal Groszek

Genre: Paranormal Romance

evan evolved

Synopsis:

When Evan O’Fion wakes up in a hotel room after being kidnapped by the cocky and mysterious Ezra Volkov, her first impulse is to flee. But Ezra surprises her by giving her a choice: run away and live in darkness or go with him and discover the truth of who she really is.

Does this beautiful, dangerous man have the answers to her questions? And will the truth be worth the heartache it will cause her?

Evan isn’t sure who to trust, but she’s desperate for answers. Armed with her growing Elemental abilities and a fearlessness that borders on reckless, Evan begins a journey into her past and inadvertently unleashes the ghosts that those around her have tried to keep hidden, leading to the most shocking revelation yet.

Review:

Last week I posted my review for Book One in the series: EVAN ELEMENTAL. I was excited to continue reading the story and it certainly did not disappoint. EVAN EVOLVED, as the title suggests, takes the story to a higher level as Evan continues to discover her new powers and gains confidence not only in her abilities but in herself as well. In the review for EVAN ELEMENTAL, I mentioned that I had a hard time liking the main character Evan, and she seemed to come across as a spoiled brat. Though Evan certainly has a few childish throwback moments in Book Two, she has certainly matured…a lot, and I found her to be likeable and entertaining.

Book One waivered between YA and NA, but Book Two is definitely NA due to several steamy scenes. I enjoyed the love story aspect in the first book, but EVAN EVOLVED had me on edge and quickly turning the pages as the love story quickly turned into a love triangle. In most books that I’ve read with a love triangle, I’m usually rooting for one guy over the other, but in this case, both guys are extremely likeable, and Evan has a reason to like them both, so I was torn for her and I am anxious to read Book 3 to find out where the story is going to go. Oh yes, that’s right, even though the story has a happy ending and doesn’t leave the reader hanging completely, the story is definitely not finished.

There were several surprises and turn of events that kept the story moving at a fast pace. My only slight criticism, as with Book One, would be minor grammatical and editing errors. I usually prefer first person point of view, but for some reason that I still can’t figure out, the first person style sometimes made the flow of the story a little difficult. That’s my only complaint though. I enjoyed Book One, but EVAN EVOLVED was definitely even better and held my interest the entire time. I am completely caught up in the love triangle and without giving the story away, I love the mix of powers and abilities that were thrown into Book Two. I can’t wait to find out where Book Three is going to lead Evan.

Excerpt #1:

I sit up, gasping. The last remnants of the dream fade as my eyes adjust to the flood of sunlight. A dream, that’s all it was. Only, it felt so real I’m having a hard time separating myself from the role my mind had me playing.

I inhale deeply and am surprised by the salty tang of ocean air. I swing my legs over the edge of the bed and slowly lower my feet to the floor, waiting for my body to rebel. I expect to feel sore and cramped, but I feel completely refreshed. I’m not sure how much time has passed, but I know that it’s been at least a couple of days since Ezra knocked me out and took me from Price; I can feel the passage of time in my bones.

My eyes adjust to the light and I’m able to take in more of my surroundings. The room I’m in is simple: white walls, sheer white curtains, even a white bedspread. It’s all very airy and light and I would normally appreciate the elegant simplicity, but right now not so much. No, right now I’m pissed as hell.

Tentatively, I push myself up off the bed. Even though I feel refreshed, I falter when I try to stand. Just when I’m about to hit the floor, hard, a burst of wind rushes by my face and I’m suddenly being supported.

“Morning, Sunshine,” Ezra says softly, looking down at me with a smug grin.

I try to push him away, but he tightens his grip. “Let go of me,” I spit through clenched teeth.

He gives me a wicked smile and releases me. I sink back onto the bed—my legs still Jell-O—and lay back, pressing my palms to my eyes. “Jesus, do I have some sort of sign above my head that says ‘Fuck with me’? Because it sure as hell feels like it.”

I feel the bed sink next to me under Ezra’s weight. I know I should be trying to escape, but I honestly don’t know where I would go if I did. “Where are we?” I ask my voice muffled under my hands.

“South Carolina,” Ezra responds casually. I giggle because he says it more like “Caroliner.” Then I freak out.

“South Carolina?” I shriek, jumping up from the bed. My legs wobble a bit, but I can finally stand. The questions I should have already asked bubble up and flow out of me in a rush. “What did you do to me? Why did you take me? What are you going to do?” I start for the door, expecting Ezra to try and stop me, but he doesn’t. Curiosity beats out panic and I pause in the doorway to look back at him.

Ezra is lying on the bed with his hands folded behind his head as if he’s the most relaxed he’s ever been. I take a half step backward into another dimly lit room, my eyes still trained on him, but he doesn’t even flinch.

“What? You’re not going to try and stop me?” I ask incredulously. His lack of concern is making me nervous.

After a beat, he speaks. “No, you’re free to leave if you want.” I watch as he sits up and looks over his shoulder at me. “I didn’t kidnap you and you’re not my prisoner.” His mouth turns up at the corner and his eyes sparkle with amusement.

“Then, why did you take me?” I demand. “Oh, and hey, why the hell did you kiss me?”

Ezra’s mouth splits into a full on smile. “I was hoping you’d forget about that.” He sits up and scratches the back of his neck and tries to look contrite, despite his smile. I bite my lip to hide a smile of my own. What the hell is wrong with me?

I narrow my eyes at him. “Yeah, well, I didn’t. It was weird and confusing. Why did you do it?”

Ezra pats the bed beside him, indicating for me to sit down. I hesitate only momentarily before complying. There is something so disarming about him right now; he seems more at ease and less shifty than he did back in Price. I eye him warily, making sure to keep some space between us.

Ezra sighs and takes my hand in his, sending a dark, primal surge of energy straight through me. “Because I wanted to? And because you looked like you needed comforting.” Ezra gives me a crooked grin and squeezes my hand. I yank it out of his grip immediately.

“At least you’re being honest,” I sigh. “That’s not something I’m used to. Still, it was wrong of you to touch me like that.”

“I know, and I am deeply sorry for taking advantage like that. It won’t happen again.” I pry my gaze from the polished wooden floor and meet Ezra’s eyes. He looks sincerely sorry and I relax a little, despite my better judgment.

“Can I try something?” I ask hesitantly.

Ezra’s eyes light up with humor. “Of course,” he answers with a smile.

Gingerly, I place my hand on Ezra’s bare forearm; his sharp intake of breath is his only response. Slowly, the dark feeling swells from him to me. It’s indescribable, the way it feels, the way the darkness unfurls and fills me until I feel solid and whole.

“What is that?” I gasp. “What are you doing to me?”

Ezra shakes his head slowly. “I’m not doing anything,” he answers, his voice low and thoughtful.

I tear my hand away like it burns. “Don’t lie to me. I know you can do things, mess with people’s minds, like you did with my aunt. What are you doing to me when you touch me?” I’m aiming for harsh and demanding, but I just sound desperate.

Ezra strokes his chin, looking bemused. “Can you describe for me what it is you think I’m doing?” he asks, sounding like he’s indulging the fantasy of a child or a mentally ill person.

“Fine,” I hiss through clenched teeth. I stand up and head back to the door. “You know,” I say, stopping and looking over my shoulder at Ezra who continues to look thoroughly amused, “for a second I actually thought you might not be the creepy psycho-kidnapper that I thought you were, but I guess I was wrong.”

I take a step toward the door, but am suddenly blocked by the sheepish-looking form of Ezra. His shoulders slump under my accusing glare. “Evan, I didn’t kidnap you; not the way you’re thinking. And I’m not ‘messing’ with you. I can assure you that I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

I grit my teeth in frustration. Everything that’s logical and rational tells me I shouldn’t believe him, but I do. This whole thing is so messed up. The look on my face must say exactly that, because Ezra’s expression softens with sympathy.

“Just, come back in and sit down. I’ll get you something to eat. You must be starved.”

I cock an eyebrow at him. “Kind of. Since I’ve been knocked out for, what, days? Thanks to you.”

Ezra goes from concerned to amused in a flash. The cheeky glint in his eyes and the sudden appearance of a dimple at the left corner of his mouth causes my breath to catch. I shake my head to clear away the disturbing thoughts trying to worm their way into my mind.

“You’re right. I’ll explain everything to you; just sit down and collect yourself,” he says, taking my shoulder and gently urging me back into the room.

I slip out from under his grasp and turn to head back to the bed. “Fine. But I need to take a shower. And change these clothes. Seriously, I stink. And don’t tell me to ‘collect myself.’ The last time I checked, we aren’t living in a Jane Austen novel.”

I flop down on the bed and my body immediately thanks me. Maybe I am sore after all. “You better have a really good explanation for what…” I stop mid-sentence when I look back to the doorway and see that Ezra is gone. “Right,” I mutter to myself.

Even though it feels good just to sit here, I’m suddenly restless, my body all too aware of how sentient I’ve been. I stand up and wander over to the window. It’s slightly open, allowing a soft breeze to filter into the room. Outside, the sun is shining over a pristine white beach dotted with tourists who mill about unhurried in various states of undress. Beyond the beach is an endless stretch of blue water that bleeds seamlessly into a clear azure sky.

It’s a relaxing scene, but it does little to soothe my budding anxiety. Now that I’m alone and fully conscious, the gravity of what happened back in Price is beginning to set in; that, and the fact that I’ve apparently been kidnapped. Not that I couldn’t just…

I close my eyes and feel the familiar buzz of power crackle against and under my skin. I know that if I turn around and take a step I’ll be back in Price. That would be the responsible thing to do, head back and face the disaster that’s waiting for me. But, Ezra did say he would explain things…so maybe I should hear him out? If I go back to Price right away, I’ll be going back to locked doors and dead ends; to a guy that I supposedly love who can’t bother to tell me the truth about anything. So, I’ll stay, just a little bit longer. Then I’m out of here.

I feel Ezra’s presence before I hear him. “I hope you like stale bagels, because that’s all they had left over from breakfast,” he says as he pushes through the door. I glance over my shoulder to see him standing frozen just in the threshold, a Styrofoam plate holding a couple of dry looking bagels and a few packets of cream cheese clutched in his right hand.

“Something wrong?” I ask, noting the way he’s standing perfectly framed in the shimmering arch.

Ignoring my question, Ezra leans forward and squints. “What is that?”

In an instant, the arch disappears. “What’s what?” I figure, if we keep answering questions with questions we can avoid this conversation altogether, because I have no idea how he could see that when no one else has.

Ezra frowns after a moment then his mouth folds itself into its usual smirk. “Must have been a trick of the light.” The calculating glint in his eyes says I’m not fooling him, but he lets it slide.

I try not to look too relieved as I sit back down on the bed. Ezra sets the plate beside me and proceeds to look amazingly hot with his left ankle crossed over his knee and his white linen shirt straining deliciously over the muscles in his biceps. What is wrong with me? When we were in Price his looks were easy to ignore, especially with Lex around to distract me. Now, alone in this sparse and tiny room, there is no denying how beautiful this man really is. Focus, Evan. This guy friggin kidnapped you.

“So, you said you would explain. Explain.” I stand up, cross my arms over my chest, and attempt to stare Ezra down. He may have almost a foot on me, but I’m packing some serious heat and he doesn’t know that. Sure, I haven’t exactly figured out how to use my abilities as a “weapon,” but I’m sure I could improvise if I’m put to the test. I’m thinking, electrocution.

To his credit, Ezra has the decency to look mildly impressed. “I will,” he says softly. “Please eat.” Ezra gestures to the plate of bagels that look seconds away from growing mold. I wrinkle my nose and he smiles. “Come on, Evan. I feel bad enough as it is. I don’t need to have you starving, too.”

“You feel bad,” I say incredulously.

“Of course I do. Despite appearances, I’m not exactly a criminal. I had a job to do, so I did it. Nothing more. I regretted it immediately as soon as it was done.” He leans back and rests on his elbows. I notice that the top of his shirt is unbuttoned revealing a patch of soft copper-colored hair.

“A job?” I ask, clearing my throat. Ezra raises his eyebrows and gestures toward the plate. Reluctantly, I sit down beside him and pick up the least offending piece of bread, bite off a chunk and chew. It’s somewhat rubbery, but it doesn’t taste nearly as bad as I was expecting it to. Ezra nods, a pleased look on his face, before continuing.

“Yes. I was sent to secure you and bring you back to your home.” He plucks at a loose thread in the duvet and doesn’t meet my eyes,

I snort a laugh and half choke on my bagel. “You do realize that I was at home. I mean, Price is where I live now. Before that, I lived in Connecticut. I know you’re a foreigner and all, but a quick glance at a map would have told you that South Carolina is a long ways off from Connecticut.”

Ezra smirks. “As it happens, I am very familiar with American geography. That being said, I am taking you to your true home.”

I open my mouth to make some sort of asinine retort, but I stop before saying anything. When it comes down to it, I don’t really know anything about who I am or who my family really is. The weight of emotion that I’ve been struggling to repress comes crashing down on me and I suddenly feel very weak and vulnerable. Tears pool in my eyes and begin to fall down my cheeks with shameless abandon. Ezra’s green eyes widen in horror.

“Please, don’t cry. I didn’t mean to upset you.” Exra pushes the plate out of the way and slides closer to me, awkwardly patting me on the back. When his hand lingers for a second too long, I’m slow to react. There’s something about his touch that fills me, that seeps into all of my emptiest places. I manage to shake the feeling.

“Can you please not touch me?” I say quietly. My voice lacks the conviction I wish it had, and I can tell Ezra senses that, too.

“I’m sorry,” he says, pulling his hand away and placing it on his knee. “It’s sort of like a compulsion.”

I raise my eyebrows. “What? Touching people?”

“No,” he answers with a small smile, “comforting you. I can’t seem to tolerate seeing you in distress.”

I shake my head, unable to comprehend what he’s saying. “If that’s the case, then why the hell were you being so creepy back in Price? Because that was pretty damn distressing.”

“Was I?” He smirks, giving nothing away.

I wipe the tears from my face, thankful that my nose isn’t running. “Whatever,” I say flatly. “Tell me why you brought me here. I can, and will hurt you if you keep fucking with me.”

I glance sideways at Ezra expecting him to look angry or amused, but he just looks sad. “I believe you, what with those amazing elemental abilities you have,” he says quietly, a hint of curiosity in his voice.

I drop the stiff bagel back on its plate and fold my arms across my chest, narrowing my eyes at Ezra. “What are you talking about?”

Ezra presses his lips together to hold back his laugh, his eyes clouded with thought. “I had my suspicions before, but you definitely confirmed them last night. Within an hour of us being here every electrical socket and light bulb in this room was fried. I suppose it didn’t happen on the plane because I had you in a deep state of unconsciousness. Once we got to the hotel, I lifted my hold so that you could wake up naturally. As soon as I did that, it was like fireworks in here.”

“What are you talking about?” I ask again blankly. I clench my fists in my lap feeling exposed and slightly humiliated.

Ezra rolls his eyes. “They really haven’t told you anything. What are they playing at?” he asks more to himself than me. I slap his arm to get him to focus.

“Start talking, pretty boy, or I will not hesitate to drop you in a hole in Siberia.” Instead of being terrified like I intended, Ezra laughs.

“You should learn to be patient.” He leans back on his elbows again. The clouds shift in the sky outside the window and the room is cast in shadows. I ignore Ezra’s comment and stand up and head to the door where the light switch is. I flick it up and down but nothing happens.

“I told you,” Ezra says softly, his breath warm on my neck where he now stands behind me, “fried.” I didn’t even hear him move.

“Why?” I ask, turning. I breathe in sharply when I come face to face with Ezra. We’re standing so close I can see the delicate blue veins beneath his too pale skin. I don’t remember him being this pale since the first time I saw him.

When he speaks, his breath is soft and sweet on my face. “One of the main telltale signs of a fledgling Elemental is the inability to control new powers during sleep. Since you fried the sockets and the bulbs, I’m assuming you have the power to summon and control electricity. You’re among a very small and elite group of Elementals. I’d expect no less from someone so captivating.” Ezra smirks and begins to back away. Without thinking, I reach out and grab his wrist to stop him.

“There are others, like me? That can control them all?” I don’t even care how vulnerable and desperate I sound, because I feel vulnerable and desperate. Never once have I ever felt the need to belong, not until now when the hope that I’m not alone is so strong and tantalizing.

Ezra tilts his head to the side and regards me with a curious expression. “What do you mean, ‘them all’?” He takes a step closer and takes my free wrist with his free hand. “Evan,” he persists, “what do mean?”

I swallow hard and ignore the intensity of feeling that pulses through our unbroken connection. “I didn’t mean anything. Forget it.” I drop his wrist and press myself against the closed door, trying to put distance between us, but Ezra follows with a step of his own.

“I see you there, under that mask,” he says, reaching up and placing his fingertips on the side of my face. “You can’t hide from me.”

I take in a shaky breath and laugh. “You’re being creepy again.”

Ezra nods slightly, that sad look back on his face. “The bathroom is just outside, off the living area.”

I raise an eyebrow. “Living area?”

“It’s a suite.” Ezra drops my wrist and reaches around me to turn the knob and pulls the door open, forcing me to step closer to him. Without taking my eyes off him, I slide around the open door and into an equally pristine white living room.

“There?” I ask, pointing toward a door next to the one I just left. Ezra nods once and strolls by me without a glance.

“Get washed up. I’ll go get you something better to eat and something clean to wear.”

“Ezra?” I watch as he pauses in the doorway to the hall, the muscles in the back of his neck tense. “Nevermind,” is all I can think to say.

Without responding, he steps into the hall and shuts the door behind him leaving me alone. I press my lips together to suppress a sigh. My emotions are all over the place when it comes to Ezra.

How far am I willing to go to get the answers I want? And why do I get the feeling that there is something way bigger going on than anything that I could imagine? For the simple reason that there’s nothing else I can do right now, I turn and head to the bathroom.

Excerpt #2:

“Ezra, are we dead?” A blush breaks out across my face and chest. I can’t help but ask, though, because it’s something that’s been on my mind since the word “vampire” wedged its way into my everyday vocabulary.

Ezra drops his hands from my back and takes my hand in his. He guides it up and places my palm flat on his chest. “Do I feel dead?” His heart beats warm and steady against my hand.

“No,” I whisper. I drop my hand and turn slowly so that my back is facing him and pull my hair over my shoulder. “Unzip me?”

“Evan, I don’t know if that’s a good idea,” Ezra says, his voice strained.

I look back at him over my shoulder. “I want you to see me, to touch me.” My blush deepens. “Don’t make me beg.” I look away quickly, embarrassed by the raw need in my voice.

Ezra doesn’t hesitate any further; he reaches up and slowly unzips my dress. When I turn back to face him, Ezra captures my mouth in a painstaking kiss. I feel it in every cell of my body, the rightness of it. I slip my arms around his neck and wind my fingers through his hair. He groans against my mouth, sending my pulse soaring. In my lust-filled haze, I feel him take my hips and guide me so that I’m walking backward in the direction of his bed. As the back of my knees hit the bed frame, Ezra lifts me by the waist and tosses me lightly onto the bed. I barely have time to laugh before I feel the whole of his weight on me. The room quiets to the sound of our breath. “Ezra, I want this. But I have to know, do you?”

“Yes, absolutely.” He shifts his weight, parting my legs with his knees. I wrap them willingly around his waist.

“I don’t want to hurt you, Ezra. I can’t….I can’t be in any sort of relationship right now. I remember what you said, in the field…” Ezra stops me with a kiss. It’s brief and sweet and for a second I forget how much trouble I’m in.

“If you’re done trying to save me from myself,” he whispers against my mouth, “then I’d really like to finish taking this dress off.”

Review of EVAN ELEMENTAL by Crystal Groszek and Pinterest Father’s Day project

evan elemental

I signed up to participate in the blog tour for Crystal Groszek’s book, EVAN EVOLVED, Book 2 in this trilogy, because the blurb sounded fascinating and I always enjoy a good YA paranormal story. I decided I’d better read the first book, EVAN ELEMENTAL, so I’d be caught up and know what’s going on 🙂 This has been a fun trilogy to read and I’m happy to present the review of Book One: EVAN ELEMENTAL. After the book review, be sure to check out my Pinterest project for the week. Since Father’s Day is just around the corner, I decided to get the kids’ help with this one. In case you’re still looking for a project to do with the kids, it was a fun one 🙂 My pictures and review are posted at the bottom 🙂

Blurb:

Orphaned at seventeen, Evan O’Fion has a choice: let her loss define her or rise above it and become more than she ever believed she was capable of. The problem? Giving in to the darkness that calls her is just too easy. Add in to the mix the ability to control the elements and travel across space and time, and Evan is pretty sure she’s going to lose it completely. Giving in would be a relief, but Evan is beginning to realize that there are people counting on her and that the mystery of her past is the key to it all.

As Evan struggles to put her party-girl ways behind her, she must learn to control her new abilities and face the fact that everything she thought she knew about herself was a lie. On top of it all, she has to face a new town, new home, new school, and a sexy dangerous guy…or two.

Dealing has never been Evan’s strong suit. How she’s going to handle it all and come out alive, she has no idea, but she’s stronger than ever and she’s not going down without a fight.

Review:

I enjoyed the story a lot. It was a quick read and kept me wanting to find out what would happen next. As with any story there are always aspects that I enjoy and things I would change. The story is told from a first person point of view from the main character, Evan. At age seventeen, Evan is orphaned at the beginning of the story and sent to live with a relative she’s never met. Her world is surrounded in mystery from the moment she enters her new life, and she is kept relatively in the dark throughout most of the story. Crystal has a knack for keeping the story progressing smoothly, and I flew through the book because I kept wanting to find out what would happen next. Soon after Evan arrives to her new town, she begins to discover that she is developing supernatural abilities and can manipulate the elements of nature.

As much as I enjoyed the story, I had mixed emotions about the main character Evan and had a hard time relating to her. When I read YA books, I always consider the teenagers I work with and whether I would recommend the same book for them. Keeping in mind that YA books are typically considered to fall in the 13-17 age group, I would definitely say that this story is for the older age range of mature YA readers due to language and Evan’s poor choices of turning to drugs. The story would have been just as entertaining if Evan didn’t use drugs because there wasn’t an explicit “good” reason following the plot development for her to turn to drugs, not that there ever is a good reason anyway. In this case, Evan just seems like a spoiled brat. I can see that teenagers who struggle with drugs and alcohol would be able to relate to the character, but the main plot of the story has nothing to do with overcoming a drug addiction, it was just a character flaw. I would have enjoyed it more if Evan could be seen as a better role model to younger readers. With that said, because I had to get in out there since this is a YA book, it was an enjoyable story.

There is definite character development throughout the story, and I enjoyed reading about Evan as she discovered her new supernatural abilities. I haven’t read a story exactly like this one before with a character who can manipulate the elements of nature. It was very interesting. The only thing I would have liked to have seen more would have been more time spent on Evan exploring her new abilities. There were a few instances in the story that focused on her new talents, but they were all fairly brief. I anticipate that in the stories to come, Evan will continue to discover what she is capable of. I think this first story is just the beginning of more to come 🙂

I also enjoyed the love story entwined within. As Evan is struggling to deal with the loss of her parents, discovering her new abilities, and the obvious secrets those around her are keeping, she is also faced with a surprising love interest, who IS a very likable character. 🙂

There were a few instances in the story when I questioned the first person perspective and choice of verb usage and a few punctuation errors here and there, but nothing that was distracting unless you were looking for it. Overall, this was a great story. *Warning* it does end with a huge cliffhanger, so it’s a good thing the second book, EVAN EVOLVED, is already out. I anxiously started reading it the day after I finished this book 🙂 Look for my review of EVAN EVOLVED on Sunday 🙂

Father’s Day Project “Dad Rocks”

I had a hard time deciding which Father’s Day project to do this year. After perusing Pinterest, I came up with a ton of fun ideas. I pinned all of the great projects I found under “Kids Crafts” if you’re looking for other Father’s Day ideas. The link to my Pinterest page is at the bottom of this post 🙂 I decided on this salt dough project because my kids LOVE rocks and they were all able to participate in the project.

To start with I sent the kids into the backyard in search of rocks. This was the easy part because I live in Arizona, and half of my backyard is made up of rocks 🙂 The project definitely could have been on a smaller scale using smaller rocks – the rocks we used ranged between 1/2 inch – 1.5 inches. The dimensions for the final project are 12″ x 6″.

After we gathered the rocks, the kids had fun sorting out their favorites and figuring out which rocks would work best for each letter. Once we had sorted through the rocks and spelled out “Dad Rocks”, the kids helped me mix up the salt dough mixture. It was difficult to knead the dough, but we still took “turns” and the girls thought they were helping to knead it and that’s what mattered 🙂 The next step was to roll it out. We rolled it on floured wax paper so it would be easy to transfer to a cookie sheet. The rectangle is, of course, not perfect, but it’s a kids’ project and the kids helped, so that’s what matters 🙂

photo 1(1) photo 2(2)

It’s optional of course, but I decided it would look cute and be more personalized if they made an imprint of their hands first. The rocks cover up half of their handprints, but I like that it gives a personalized touch 🙂 Once they pressed their hands in, I carefully pressed in each rock. I thought each rock was secure, but once it had baked, 2 of the rocks fell out. This is an easy fix with superglue, but I would suggest double checking that the rocks are completely pressed into the dough.

Another thing to be aware of is that if you make a project of this size it’s going to take a REALLY long time to bake, so don’t plan on using the oven for a while.  Also, if you plan to hang it up, which I hadn’t planned on at first, make sure you punch the holes before you bake it. After we put it all together, I started to bake it and then started wondering what we were going to do with it once we give it to “Daddy” for Father’s Day. It’s a little too big to just place on a desk. About an hour and a half into the baking process, I realized that it would look cute hung up, so I pulled it out of the oven, and thankfully the dough was still soft enough that I could punch holes 🙂 A small smaller project, of course, would make a cute paper weight.

When all was said and done, it took approximately 12-14 hours to bake. It’s a big process, but the kids loved it, and I’m happy that it turned out cute. The kids are very excited to give it to their daddy for Father’s Day 🙂 I found several salt dough recipes online and they all seemed to vary slightly. I’m sure they all work, some call for more salt, some call for higher baking temperatures. I just picked a recipe that had a good blog and description, but there are lots more out there. If you don’t have your own salt dough recipe, this is the one I used. Here’s the full link to the blog if you want to read more on the recipe:

http://www.craftychild.com/salt-dough-recipe.html

Salt Dough for crafts

– 3 Cups flour

– 1/2 cup table salt

– 1 1/4 cut water

Directions:

Mix flour and salt in a bowl. To make colored dough, add a couple teaspoons of food coloring to the water before you add it to the flour mix. Slowly stir in the water then knead the dough on a floured surface. If the dough is too crumbly, slowly add a little water at a time until it is smooth and elastic – 5 to 10 minutes.

Bake at 170 degrees on a baking paper lined tray. It will take a while so just keep an eye on it. The bigger the project, the longer it’s going to take. The project is finished when it’s hard and you can’t make an indentation in it. Also be sure to check the bottom. At first I thought our project was finished, but the bottom was still soft. I peeled the paper off and put it on a lower rack to finish baking.

First, enjoy this short excerpt of Rena watching Nevan perform on stage. In addition to her ability to trigger earthquakes, Rena can sense the tiniest ground vibrations.

+++

As Rena approached the stage, the drums’ pulse crawled up through the bottom of her feet, though it didn’t make her nauseous like earthquakes did. It tickled her soles and delighted her heart. She pushed her way through the crowd, eager for a spot close enough to catch sight of Nevan. The band members took turns playing solo, but the current one didn’t play like Nevan. Even with the steady beat, some onlookers couldn’t catch the rhythm and their sporadic movements raked her nerves. She stood on her toes, attempting to see more of the stage, but was still too far away.

The music changed, the tempo intensified. She recognized Nevan’s style and felt torn between continuing to search for Blaze and watching him. If she didn’t take this opportunity to see his solo, she’d have to wait a whole year. He looked good, now and every other time she saw him. Watching him perform on stage was different. It made her feel like a musical thread tethered them.

She wanted less space between her and that thread. Remembering the boulders ringing the stage, she made her way to the first one she spotted. She slipped off her shoes and stashed them in her backpack, before she climbed up.

Rena connected with the sound waves flowing through the rock seconds before she spotted Nevan. He wore a pair of blue jean shorts and a saffron gold V-neck shirt. The short sleeves of the fitted material hugged his biceps. Her lips parted as sudden warmth surged through her body.

Nevan played with abandoned fervor, eyes closed and lower lip between his teeth, his hands thumped away at the drumheads. Somehow, he managed to keep hold of the bongos while he danced on his seat. Even his dreadlocks rollicked as his head bopped to the rhythm. Joy flowed from him and spread through the crowd. Soon, almost everyone danced along. Like back-up singers, a number of people infused the music with their fingers snapping, hands clapping, and scat singing.

Rena swelled with pride she had no right to claim as his song morphed into something so emotionally raw, it gripped the very essence of her. Right there on that boulder, she danced. And didn’t care who saw. Her body dipped and swayed in perfect time as if she knew his improvised song by heart, as if he’d written it for her alone. She wrapped herself in the thought, that she was Nevan’s muse, and everyone else, everything else disappeared.

The powerful beat pulled her deeper into his song. Exquisite vibrations rolled from the stage as if their only purpose was to delight her soles. She closed her eyes, gave into the pleasure, and settled her feet against the rough grain of the boulder. The sound climbed up her calves, liquefied her knees, and continued to her stomach. It grew warm, tingly. She wanted to laugh with joy.

Nevan picked up the tempo, making her want to sink to the ground and more thoroughly tighten the tether between them. She opened her eyes, willing herself to remain upright, and barely succeeded. The crowd erupted with applause as his solo slowed. The next drummer would take over soon. By the look on the guy’s face, he was upset about following that performance. Eyes still closed, and a triumphant smile on his face, Nevan’s thumps softened. His eyes finally opened to half-slits, dazed and fierce at the same time.

They focused on her.

And that was the sad thing about one-way crushes. She could fantasize all she wanted, but in the end, him looking at her was probably only a coincidence. On the boulder, she stood elevated above most people. Humiliating herself in front of him once, was enough. With the rhythm of his song etched into her soles, she took a step back and fell.

A nearby woman gasped. Her floral scented hair brushed Rena’s hand when she bent to help her to her feet. “Are you hurt?”

“Nothing but my dignity,” Rena grumbled as she dusted off the back of her dress and straightened her necklace.

Review of HELL TRANSPORTER by Cyndi Tefft and a Pinterest experiment with Peanut Butter Energy Balls

I am thrilled to share my first review of the summer with Cyndi Tefft’s HELL TRANSPORTER, Book 2 in the Between Series. Each week throughout the summer, I will share a book review along with a Pinterest experiment. I love to cook and do craft projects, but I’ve been short on time throughout the school year. Now that the kids are out of school, I’m going to take advantage of my time with them to work on projects and recipes I’ve wanted to try throughout the year. Each week I will share a project or recipe with you and give you my review of how it turned out and, if appropriate, how kid friendly it is 🙂

hell transporter

Blurb:

Aiden MacRae has been given a new life after being stuck transporting souls to heaven for the last three hundred years. He doesn’t know the culture, the times or the slang, but there is one thing he does know: he didn’t come forward alone.

The master of hell has other plans for the Scottish Highlander and has sent a transporter of his own to get the deed done. Will Lindsey be able to save him or get caught in the crossfire?

Review:

Last year I presented my review of BETWEEN, Book 1 in the NA Between Series. The premise is based on Lindsey, a college student who dies in a car crash and falls in love with the transporter who is supposed to take her to heaven. I loved the book and was excited to continue reading the story with Book 2, HELL TRANSPORTER.

In Book 2, Lindsey finds herself head over heels in love and wondering if her new life is too good to be true. Her sense of peace soon comes crashing down when she discovers that someone else from “the other side” is after her. I love these books because it is a quick, easy read, but at the same time, Cyndi manages to create a sense of realism through rich, descriptive language. She creates enough visualization to offer the sights, smells, and feelings that the characters experience, but not too much to bog the reader down. HELL TRANSPORTER has a nice balance of character development, romance, and suspense.

Without giving anything away, I will say that HELL TRANSPORTER lives up to my expectations, and is perhaps even more exciting than the first book. I was satisfied with the ending because it didn’t leave off with a complete cliffhanger, but left me wanting enough to read the next book, EVEN IN DARKNESS.

I would recommend the series for older teenagers, as there are mild love scenes, or any adult who enjoys an excellent paranormal NA story 🙂 5 STARS *****

Peanut Butter Energy Balls

Recipe:

I found several variations of this recipe online. There are slight variations but this one was the most similar to other recipes I found.

  • 1 cup dry old-fashioned oatmeal
  • 2/3 cup toasted coconut flakes (I used raisins instead)
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter (I used all natural, no sugar)
  • 1/2 cup ground flaxseed
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips
  • 1/3 cup honey
  • 1 Tbsp. chia seeds (optional)
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract

Directions:

Stir all ingredients together in a medium bowl until thoroughly mixed. Cover and let chill in the refrigerator for half an hour.

Once chilled, roll into balls of whatever size you would like. (Mine were about 1″ in diameter.) Store in an airtight container and keep refrigerated for up to 1 week.

Makes about 20-25 balls.

I’ve been wanting to find healthier snack alternatives for the kids and myself (and the husband, ha ha) and saw the recipe for these Peanut Butter Protein Energy Balls awhile ago, and I’ve been wanting to try them. They are excellent on so many levels and I highly recommend them.

First off, they are very easy to make and it’s a fun, easy project that the kids can help out with. Full of high nutritional foods (except for the chocolate chips), the peanut butter balls give me enough energy to keep me going for hours. I can eat two in the morning and feel satisfied until lunch in comparison to eating a bowl of cereal where I am usually hungry an hour or two later. You’ll see in the recipe that flaxseeds and chia seeds are included. These are of course optional, as most of the ingredients are. You can mix and choose what you add. I was hesitant to add the seeds because I didn’t know much about them. I remembered hearing Dr. Oz talk about them on his show at one point, so I knew they had to have some sort of beneficial health value, but I couldn’t remember what it was, so I googled them. Here’s what I found:

Flaxseeds: (Taken from WebMD.com)

Although flaxseed contains all sorts of healthy components, it owes its primary healthy reputation to three of them:

  • Omega-3 essential fatty acids, “good” fats that have been shown to have heart-healthy effects. Each tablespoon of ground flaxseed contains about 1.8 grams of plant omega-3s.
  • Lignans, which have both plant estrogen and antioxidant qualities. Flaxseed contains 75 to 800 times more lignans than other plant foods.
  • Fiber. Flaxseed contains both the soluble and insoluble types.

Chia Seeds: (Taken from WebMD.com)

Chia is an edible seed that comes from the desert plant Salvia hispanica, grown in Mexico dating back to Mayan and Aztec cultures. “Chia” means strength, and folklore has it that these cultures used the tiny black and white seeds as an energy booster. That makes sense, as chia seeds are a concentrated food containing healthy omega-3 fatty acids, carbohydrates, protein, fiber, antioxidants, and calcium.

Chia seeds are an unprocessed, whole-grain food that can be absorbed by the body as seeds (unlike flaxseeds). One ounce (about 2 tablespoons) contains 139 calories, 4 grams of protein, 9 grams fat, 12 grams carbohydrates and 11 grams of fiber, plus vitamins and minerals.

The health benefits to include the seeds definitely sounded worth it and the recipe doesn’t call for a lot. I spent about $3 at a local health food store for enough seeds to make the recipe twice. The downside to the seeds is that they do get stuck in the teeth, especially the chia seeds if you have braces or any sort of permanent retainer. The little black seeds, unlike poppyseeds, swell when they get wet and become gooey. So you have to weigh that option when you consider adding them.

The Peanut Butter Energy Balls get a definite 5 stars and are highly recommended for the whole family.

Look for future books and projects that I will be reviewing this summer on my Pinterest page. I will continue to add books and projects as the summer progresses so check back 🙂
